Hariyali Teej, on Saawan sudi teej, is the festival Haryana claims as its own. Its heart is the peeng — a swing hung from a neem or peepal — and the songs women sing on it. Married daughters receive the sindhara (kothli) from their parents: a new suit, bangles, mehndi and baskets of ghewar, suhali and gulgule.

How the day goes

• The night before: mehndi on the hands and feet.
• Morning: green clothes or a leheriya chunri, green bangles, a visit to the temple.
• Afternoon: swings, Teej songs and, in many towns, a Teej mela with kabaddi and swings for children.
