Jan – FebMustard in yellow bloom; Basant Panchami and Sir Chhotu Ram Jayanti.
Mar – AprWheat ripens through Phaag and Holi; harvest and mandi rush by Vaisakhi.
May – JunLoo and empty fields; paddy nurseries in the canal belt; Nirjala Ekadashi.
Jul – AugPaddy transplanting, cotton and bajra growing; Teej swings and Gugga Navami.
Sep – OctCotton picking and paddy harvest; Sanjhi, Dussehra and Karva Chauth.

Haryana ke ilaake, alag rang

Haryana is small, but its six cultural regions speak, farm and celebrate differently. Our dates are for Kurukshetra; the customs below change as you travel.

Nardak & Bangar

Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Rohtak

The fertile heart: wheat and paddy, the 48-kos tirthas of Kurukshetra, and the Bangru dialect people think of as 'standard' Haryanvi.

Bagar

Sirsa, Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani

Sand dunes, cotton, guar and bajra; Bagri speech close to Rajasthani, and camel carts still seen near the border.

Khadar

Panipat, Sonipat, Karnal, Yamunanagar

The Yamuna floodplain: sugarcane, basmati, Panipat's handloom and Yamunanagar's plywood mills.

Ahirwal

Rewari, Mahendragarh, Jhajjar, parts of Gurugram

Land of soldiers and Rao Tula Ram; Ahirwati dialect, bajra-mustard farming and Narnaul's old monuments.

Mewat

Nuh and parts of Palwal

Meo culture, the Aravalli ridge, Hasan Khan Mewati's memory and some of the state's richest oral epics.

Shivalik & Morni

Panchkula, Ambala, north Yamunanagar

Foothills of the Himalaya: Morni Hills, Mansa Devi and Kalka, Lohri bonfires and Punjabi-influenced speech.

Panchang padhna seekho

  1. Maas aur paksha — "Kaatak badi chauth" means the fourth day of the dark half of Kartik. Haryana's months end on Purnima.
  2. Tithi — the lunar day, counted at sunrise. Some festivals look at evening, midnight or moonrise instead.
  3. Nakshatra — the Moon's star; weddings and griha pravesh need specific ones. See shubh muhurat.
  4. Rahu kaal — an eighth of the day avoided for new starts. Check today's Rahu kaal.
